How to Extract

Extraction is the only scoreboard that matters in Active Matter. A full pouch on a corpse is a story, not progress. The loop is always the same: pick contracts, enter Isolated or Open, harvest active matter, loot with a budget, and stand in a portal before the zone finishes collapsing. If you are still learning Shelter terminals, finish the beginner guide first. This page assumes you can deploy.

The raid loop

You spawn with a short safe window — invisibility and invincibility in a small radius — then the watch starts telling the truth. Active matter is on you as you harvest it. Loot is in pouches, pockets, backpack, weapon slots, and any safe container you paid CAM for. The map (M) shows extracts, custom markers, and the shrinking border when Unstable Zone is the modifier. Raid types spells out Isolated (PvE), Open (PvPvE), Distortion, Overgrowth, and Unstable Zone. Unstable raids shrink until the last portal is a knife fight. Other raids still end; they just give you more than one door for longer.

Leave when the bag is good enough, not when it is perfect. That sentence is the whole skill.

Mandatory versus optional contracts

Current rules keep one primary contract on the board. It does not block extraction. It keeps its rewards if you complete it. It does not pay Monolith Tokens. Daily contracts and key contracts sit under it. Operative objectives chain in sequence and also skip tokens. Investigations are the ones you pick in prep; the rest auto-fill.

Treat the primary as optional for the portal and mandatory for your brain. A Collect and Extract run that dies at 90% volume is a worse raid than a clean leave with two notes and a stack of Chronotraces. Specimen Capture, High-Priority Cargo, and Place-and-Protect are how greedy squads donate kits. If the contract wants you on the far side of a collapsing border, drop the contract. You can read how to beat anomalies for capture-trap targets; you cannot read a guide from inside a closed zone.

Extract points, safe containers, and dying with loot

Extracts are portals. They are marked. They are also where other operatives wait in Open. Isolated still has monsters that path to noise. Do not sprint the last fifty meters with a flashlight on and a Robot Dog clattering behind you unless you like company.

Safe containers are CAM items, not a free Tarkov pouch. Small, medium, and large sizes exist. If you extract, the container comes home and you can reuse it. If you die, the game can evacuate what was inside — and consume the container. You can opt out of that evacuation on the death screen when you would rather keep the box than the junk. Put the irreplaceable copy in the box: a key, an enriched blueprint item, a stack of CAM-bought injectors. Do not put three rusty shotguns in a medium box and call it a plan.

Pouches and Body Sleeve pockets are not safe. Swap a pouch off a corpse and you swap their pockets too — your old pouch keeps your stuff, their pouch keeps theirs. Plan that before you loot a body in a doorway.

Die with a backpack and you drop a care package. In Isolated that package is PvE loot for the next you. In Open it is a billboard. Either way, the Replicator is how you stop caring about a lost rifle. Until the blueprint is researched, every gun is unique. After it is researched, every gun is a timer.

Beacons, revives, and mindvaults

Beacons have their own slot. You no longer plant them like a camping stove. Carry one, and it arms on death. You can pick a beacon back up after it is placed. Tactical beacons are the other flavour: they revive you on random Agency-issued rental gear instead of your kit. That is a second chance with a stranger’s rifle, not a full undo.

You can revive any operative, not only squadmates. A downed rival is a person you can stand up or a backpack you can empty. Both are legal. Downed players can ping a help request. Standing someone up in Open is how temporary alliances happen around an Alpha Flowerman and how you get shot in the back thirty seconds later.

The mindvault is the consciousness widget on the body. Hacking it yields active matter. Allies and the owner hack faster than a stranger. Hacking pings the body — treat it like firing a flare if you are still in contested space. You can still revive after a hack; the point is the matter and the delay, not a permanent delete. If you are the corpse, assume the ping is live the moment someone touches you.

Robot Dogs, sleds, and Isolated versus Open

A Robot Dog is extra volume that walks. Signal grenades call yours. You can send a dog to extract without escorting it, but it has to be in range of the portal. Pathing fails on gravity tiles, fences, and doorways. If the UI warns that the dog will be abandoned, it is not bluffing every time — close the gap. Quad bikes can grow a trunk that dumps into the Shelter when you extract; dogs are still the common mule.

Sleds strap to an operative so you can haul cargo that will not fit a pouch. They make you loud, slow, and obvious. Use them for High-Priority Cargo and vehicle-adjacent objectives, not for a casual Shegolskoe stroll.

Isolated is where you learn extracts. Open is where extracts have snipers. Downtown adds police and SWAT to the usual monster list — see Downtown. Dalniy tiles each have their own portal rhythm — see Dalniy Island. Bring a kit you can reprint, a container you can afford to burn, and a beacon if CAM allows it. Then leave while the portal is still a door and not a rumor.

For the keys that open the map, heal radial, and flashlight, use controls. If you want PvP without betting the stash, queue Nexus battles instead of camping a portal. For whether this loop is worth 29.99, use the Active Matter review.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common questions.

Do I have to finish the primary contract to extract?

No. The current primary does not block the portal. It keeps its rewards if you finish it and it does not pay Monolith Tokens. Leave if the border or a squad is about to take the bag.

What happens if I die with loot in a safe container?

You can evacuate the contents and consume the container, or opt out and keep the box. Nothing in pouches, pockets, or the backpack is safe. CAM bought the container; credits cannot reprint CAM.

Can I revive a rival operative?

Yes. Revives are not squad-locked. You can also send a help request when you are down. Standing a rival up in Open is a deal, not a friendship.

Does hacking a mindvault ping the body?

Yes. The hack yields active matter, allies and the owner finish it faster, and the ping advertises the corpse. Clear the room before you hold the interact, or accept the third party.

Can the Robot Dog extract without me?

You can send it to a portal, but it must be in extraction range. If the warning says it will be abandoned, close the distance. Gravity tiles and fences still eat pathing.
